We're separating – what about our insurance policies?

Choosing to part ways is undoubtedly a difficult decision. As you and your partner go your separate ways, joint insurance is no longer necessary. On this page, you'll find information and valuable advice for navigating your new insurance situation.

Insurance when you split up

Who should keep the insurance?

As a couple, you've shared many aspects of your life. And this includes your insurance policies, like home contents insurance and travel insurance. But when you're about to start leading separate lives, you will need separate insurance, too.

Insurance automatically follows the person listed as the policyholder.

Are you both members? Then, it's necessary to discuss who retains the existing insurance policies, and who should acquire new ones.

If your partner is the policyholder for your joint insurance, you'll need to obtain a new policy. Ensure that all insurances are updated to accurately reflect the correct number of individuals covered.

Are my children still insured?

Your children remain covered by insurance policies linked to the household, including home, building, and travel insurance.

Do you have child insurance? Then, the individual listed as the policyholder can retain the coverage. However, if the policyholder is not an IDA member, the insurance will be cancelled. This ensures that the child continues to be covered even if they no longer live with you.

Should inheritance arrangements change?

In the unfortunate event of your passing, your spouse usually receives compensation from your group life insurance or accident insurance with death coverage.

In the case of separation, you may consider updating the beneficiary (the recipient of the payout) on the insurance. It's crucial to decide whether you wish to remove your spouse and designate someone else as the beneficiary on the insurance.

We're happy to assist you in modifying the inheritance arrangements on your insurance.

Updating car and home ownership details

When transitioning through separation and you share a house and a car, It's crucial to determine who will keep the house and car. The individual staying should be noted as the policyholder for building insurance and registered as the car insurance owner.

If your former partner was initially listed as the owner for either the building or car insurance, but you are taking over both the house and the car, we can assist you in updating the insurance policies.

Additionally, please note that if there is a change in car ownership, it must be re-registered on skat.dk.
