I'll be seconded abroad. What does my insurance coverage include?

There's a lot to consider when you're being seconded - including having the right insurance. If something unexpected occurs and you're not adequately covered, it could end up costing you dearly.

Review Your Insurance Before Going on Secondment

Moving abroad involves many practical considerations - and insurance should be one of them. Taking time to review your coverage can protect you from costly surprises like theft, accidents, or other unexpected events.

Make sure your policies are up to date:

What Happens to Your Home Contents Insurance?

If you keep your Danish residence and don't register a foreign address, your home contents insurance remains active, and your belongings stay covered in Denmark.

However, if you rent out your apartment during your secondment, your insurance won't cover the tenant's possessions. In that case, the tenant should take out their own home contents insurance for the property.

Also, remember to notify your insurance provider if your home will be unoccupied while you're abroad.

You're welcome to call us at 70 21 01 91 for guidance.

Protect Your Belongings While Abroad

When you go on secondment abroad, it's common to bring personal items from home.

However, please note that we cannot provide insurance coverage for your belongings outside of Denmark if your stay exceeds 90 days. You will need to arrange for insurance that covers your personal liability and possessions, either through a provider in the country you are relocating to or through a Danish insurance company that offers such coverage.

If you are moving outside the EU/EEA, it is essential to contact an insurance company in your new country of residence.

Building Insurance During Secondment

When you're seconded abroad, your home in Denmark typically falls into one of two categories: you either leave it vacant or rent it out. Each situation comes with different insurance requirements.

If You Leave Your House Vacant

You must ensure someone monitors your house - both inside and outside - at least once a week during the entire period it's unoccupied. Without regular monitoring, your building insurance won't apply.

If You Rent Out Your House

If you rent out your house while you're abroad, your building insurance still covers the property. The coverage lasts for two years, and after that, you need to reassess the insurance.

You can insure your house for up to five years while you're on secondment.

How your car insurance covers you

If you take your car abroad during a secondment, your Danish-registered car insurance still covers you.

However, moving your possessions is not covered by our insurance policies. Typically, your employer covers moving your possessions, but it's better to double-check.

How your accident insurance covers you

Your accident insurance covers you in Denmark, Greenland, the Nordic countries, and the Faroe Islands.

If you stay in an EU/EEA country, the insurance covers you for up to 12 months. For coverage beyond 12 months, you need to make a separate agreement with us. In the rest of the world, you are covered for 12 months without the option of an extension.

We may ask you to undergo medical examinations and receive treatment in Denmark. However, we don't cover transportation or accommodation expenses related to this.

How your travel insurance covers you

Your travel insurance with IDA Forsikring provides coverage when you travel from Denmark or Greenland. It's important to note that the insurance does not extend to business trips, including the journey from Denmark to the secondment location, as these are considered work-related travel.

If you plan to travel for vacation from the country where you are seconded, please get in touch with us at 70 21 01 91. We can work together to make suitable arrangements for your coverage.

How your health insurance covers you

If you have IDA Health Insurance, you can keep it while being seconded.

It's essential to be aware that treatment and hospitalisation covered by this insurance must occur in Denmark or the Nordic countries, which include Sweden, Norway, and Finland. Please note that Greenland and the Faroe Islands are not part of the covered regions.

Other treatments should occur in Denmark, and transportation costs are only covered within the country.

How your pet insurance covers you

If you are a dog owner undergoing secondment, we encourage you to reach out to us for assistance.

When taking your dog abroad within the EU, please be aware that our dog insurance only covers the liability aspect for your dog.

Should your secondment extend beyond the initial period, we offer the option to extend the insurance for a maximum of two years. To discuss the extension or for any inquiries, feel free to contact us at 70 21 01 91.

It's essential to note that if you purchase a dog abroad during your secondment, it cannot be insured through IDA Forsikring.
