How travel insurance covers

Why do I need travel insurance?

Without Travel Insurance on your holiday abroad, you could be liable for medical treatment, hospitalisation, and repatriation if you fall ill or suffer an injury. It could add up to hundreds of thousands of DKK if you need transportation back home with a broken leg or fall ill while travelling outside Europe.

In addition, your Travel Insurance also covers luggage delays or if war, epidemics, or terrorism occur and you need evacuation.

Do I need travel insurance if I have the EU Blue Card?

The yellow health insurance card no longer covers travel abroad. Instead, you must carry the blue EU health insurance card when travelling in the EU or EEA countries (Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein).

The EU Blue Card is not a substitute for travel insurance.

The EU Blue Card covers the cost of necessary medical and hospital care under the same conditions as residents.

The blue EU health insurance card does not cover:

  • If you are travelling outside Europe.
  • If you need to be transported home to Denmark because of illness or if you are injured.
  • If you want to call a relative from Denmark because you are seriously ill or injured.
  • If your holiday is interrupted due to illness/injury.
  • If your baggage does not arrive in time.

Please remember to renew your blue EU health insurance card every five years.

Order the blue EU health insurance card at borger.dk

Can I buy IDA Travel Insurance if I am not a Danish citizen?

To get IDA Travel Insurance, you must have a Danish address and a yellow health insurance card. It is not necessary to be a Danish citizen.

What does IDA Travel Insurance cover?

IDA Travel Insurance covers:

  • The cost of medical care, medication, or hospital treatment if you are injured or fall ill during your trip.
  • Repatriation to Denmark if you or a close family member falls sick with something, suffers an injury, or dies.
  • Events during your trip that require evacuation, such as epidemics, war, or terrorism
  • Luggage delays on departure.

Travel Insurance covers everyone in your household for trips of up to 60 days. The insurance is annual, meaning you don't have to take out new travel insurance every time you travel - it covers 24/7.

Travel insurance covers you either in Europe or worldwide.

Your Travel Insurance does not include Cancellation coverage.

When you log in to My Page, you get a quick overview of your Travel Insurance. Among other things, you can see what coverage you have.
