Tips for the holiday homeowners

Summer is the peak season for a holiday home or cottage. We have brought together some good advice and guidelines that you can use to prevent damage.

Tips for holiday homeowners

On arrival at your holiday home

Please keep in mind the following advice on arrival after a long period where the house has been empty.

Read and note the dials of the electric and water meters

Examining and writing down the dials of your electric and water meters is always a good idea. Make it a habit on arrival and departure - and you'll always be up to date with your consumption.

Ventilate your home

Lack of ventilation is a frequent cause of mould and rot problems. For that reason, make sure to ventilate your home. We recommend that you do it when you arrive for the first time after winter and throughout the season.

Use linseed oil to finish wood

If you are going to paint your unpainted house during the summer, please consider applying linseed oil (raw or boiled). Its application can repel large amounts of moisture.

Avoid water damage

Examine the roof and make sure there are no holes and other damage that can cause water damage.

When you leave the place

Please consider the following advice when cutting off energy and water supplies after a long and beautiful summer.

Cut off the water and power supplies

  • When you leave your holiday home, shut off the water and make sure to empty the pipes before turning off the valves.
  • In addition, remember to turn off the power when you move back to your primer residence.
  • However, make sure that power is not essential for operating the house.

Adjust the electric water heater

Set the electric water heater to a temperature between 55°C and 60°C. Remember to turn it off only when your summer house is empty of people for more than five days, and do it a few hours before departure, so you use all the heated water.
