All you need to know about supplemental unemployment insurance

You will receive a significant portion of your salary through supplemental unemployment insurance. But how much can you expect to be paid? When? And for how long can you receive a salary supplement? We strive to answer all these questions here.

Can I take temporary work and part-time work?

Notify your unemployment

If you have lost your job and wish to file a claim on supplemental unemployment insurance, you need to declare your unemployment situation officially. The process is straightforward and can be done online with Topdanmark in collaboration with IDA Forsikring.

When does my supplemental unemployment insurance apply?

  • Your insurance is not valid until six months after you have taken it out (waiting period).
  • You must not become unemployed or know you will be laid off during the six months.
  • You must have had continuous work for a minimum of 12 months (the employment requirement).

When will I receive my first payment?

You will receive the first payment after 60 days if you become unemployed. The first 30 days are a deductible period, and the following 30 days are an accrual period.

Example of your first payout:

You will be unemployed as of January 1. The 30-day excess period means the supplemental unemployment insurance will cover you on February 1. Starting from February 1 and for the following 30 days, you will earn the right to the payment. Therefore, you will receive your first payment on March 1.  This procedure means two months pass from your first day of unemployment to the first payment.  Holiday days are also included in calculating the 30 consecutive days of unemployment.

How long can I get the payouts?

You can receive money from your supplemental unemployment insurance for 12 months. If you need insurance on more than one period of unemployment, you can get the payments for up to 36 months.   You must have been employed for at least 6 months to use your supplemental unemployment insurance again.

Am I allowed to take a holiday and still receive income supplements from my insurance?

No, you cannot receive insurance payments while on holiday. Remember to report your holiday to Topdanmark for registration.

Can I have a temporary job while receiving income supplements from my insurance?

When you receive money from your supplemental unemployment insurance, you can work temporarily for up to 12 months. However, if you accept a temporary job, you must inform Topdanmark before you start. Together with them, you will agree on whether the two periods of unemployment will be regarded as one or two.

Can I have a part-time job?

You can still receive money from the insurance if you work part-time for up to 29.6 hours a week. However, the payments will be limited because you can receive a maximum of 90% of your salary before you become unemployed. To receive income supplements from the insurance, you must meet these requirements:
  • You were dismissed before you accepted the part-time job.
  • You will be employed by an employer other than the one who terminated you.
  • You are available for a full-time job in the labour market.
  • You are actively looking for a job.

Will my insurance be cheaper after a dismissal?

You do not have to pay for your supplemental unemployment insurance while unemployed. This policy means that if you receive income supplements from the insurance from April 1 to May 31, you do not have to pay into the insurance for April and May.The price is adjusted automatically, so you do not need to take any active steps. If you have already paid, we will deduct the amount from your next payment.
