How do I register a car I bought from a car dealer?

Car dealers usually register the car in your name, but remember to inform the dealer that you are using Tryg as an insurance provider. Moreover, you must ensure that the car dealer registers the car within four working days from the date of sale.

Next, consider whether you only need state-required Liability Insurance or Comprehensive coverage and one or more insurance add-ons. You need Comprehensive coverage for some of them.

How do I register a car bought from a private seller?

The law requires the registration of the car you buy from a private seller. You need to carry out the registration yourself by following the steps below. You have to do it within four working days from the date of purchase. You can register the car online at SKAT using the vehicle registration certificate and your MitID.

You can also use the app 'Ejerskifte' from the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency (Motorstyrelsen). You do not need the registration certificate when using the app.

How to register your car

• Go to skat.dk
• Select 'Motor'
• Select 'Omregistrering og Registrering', then *omregistrering' and login with MitID.
• Enter the registration or chassis number.
• Unlock the vehicle with the control number or code sections one and two from the registration certificate.
• Assign any other users or owners who have delegated authority.
• Choose the insurance company and select 'Anmod om forsikring' (here, you should choose Tryg Forsikring as the insurance company).
• Once you have selected 'Anmod om forsikring', your insurance certificate number will be on the screen.
• Select 'Godkend registrering'.
• Make payment.
• Select 'Videre' and print the receipt.

I bought a car with no number plates

You must buy and mount new number plates for the car without number plates. You can buy them from a vehicle licensing agency, i.e. a vehicle inspection facility that functions as an operator or retailer (Synshal).
Once you have done it, you need to register the car at SKAT.dk. And finally, please remember to purchase new insurance.

Do I need to buy new insurance for my new car if I already have Car Insurance with IDA Forsikring?

Yes, a new insurance policy is necessary, although we will issue the new policy on the same terms as before.

The number plates are necessary to buy insurance because we cannot issue an insurance policy without them.

It usually takes us two to three days from the day they deliver the car before we can see the number plates in our system.

Please do not forget to select Tryg as the insurance provider at SKAT during the registration. You can drive home safely in your new car, but you must buy new insurance through our calculator as soon as possible.

Can I take out IDA Car Insurance for a leased car?

IDA Forsikring offers insurance for private car leasing. The insurance terms and conditions are the same. However, the leasing company stands as the owner of the vehicle.

We recommend you buy and add Tryg Leasing to your policy. It covers minor damages -that will figure at the end of the leasing period- and the reimbursement of the first-time payment in case of theft or total loss.

An inspector report lays the basis for minor damages for a maximum of DKK6,000 (including VAT) per damage. We provide coverage up to DKK30,000, including your excess. The inspector will issue the report at the end of the leasing period, which can last six to 48 months.

There is a first-time payment refund in case of car theft or a total loss, but only within the first four years from the date you signed a leasing contract. The amount cannot exceed DKK100,000, and the reimbursement works as follows:

• 100% within the first year
• 75% within the second year
• 50% within the third year
• 25% within the fourth year

There is no refund after the fourth year.

What rules apply to the car owner and the keeper/user?

You must indicate who owns and uses the car when you take out car insurance.

The owner of a car is the person who is paying or paid for it. The owner also receives compensation in case of damage to the vehicle. This person can also be a car user, but a partner could also be the user.

The user/keeper of the car is the person or persons driving it. Your spouse or partner can always use the car, even without being mentioned in the insurance policy. If you have a grown child who primarily uses the vehicle, then this person is the one to request a registration certificate and an insurance policy.

It is possible to register multiple users if you all share the same residence. We encourage the oldest in the household to be registered as a user, as age influences the price of the insurance policy. However, this rule only applies to you as a member and your partner.

Children living at home with cars must be registered as users.

Please get in touch with IDA Forsikring if there is an update on the current status of owners and users. We do not receive this information from SKAT. Otherwise, we may cancel the insurance policy due to the lack of this relevant data. 

How do I change the owner or user of my car?

You must register owner/user relationships when you buy insurance.

If you would like to transfer ownership or change the user of the car, you need to follow the following steps:

• Visit skat.dk.
• Log on with MitID.
• Click on 'Motor'.
• Click now on 'Registrering' and then on 'Privat ejer/brugerskifte'. Click on 'Start burger-/ejerskifte'.
• Enter registration or chassis number.
• Release the vehicle with a control number or code parts one and two from the registration certificate.
• If necessary, enter other users or owners who have previously consented.
• Select an insurance provider and click 'Anmod om forsikring' (please write Tryg as the insurance provider).
• Once you have done it, the screen will display a Car Insurance verification number.
• Continue and click on ' Godkend registrering'.
• End the process by paying.
• Select 'Videre', and print the receipt.
