How to protect your home from a storm

In Denmark, intense storms are becoming more common, and they cause severe damage. Please read here and learn some more about things you can do to prevent storm damage.

How to protect your home from a storm
In recent years, we have seen violent storms in Denmark, severely damaging several family homes, among other properties. Between 2011 and 2015, 324,000 filed claims have been recorded, which has been costly for insurer providers. We cannot predict if a storm will hit our neighbourhood, but we can prevent and try to minimize storm damage by following some steps.

What can you do yourself?

We have compiled several tips that you can follow before, during and after a storm.

Preventing tips

  • If you are living in a house, you should look for loose roof tiles, roofing sheets or other defects.
  • Also remember to check if dry verge units, barge and fascia boards, shutters or other building parts are securely attached.
  • Please remember to prune your trees to avoid large branches from falling and causing damage.
  • Outdoor trampolines are today very common, and during a storm, they can cause extensive damage. Therefore, please be sure to tie it firmly or dismount it and place it in the basement or shed.

Before the storm

  • Remove loose items outdoors, garden or balcony.
  • Lay down the flagpole.
  • Park your car wisely, for instance, away from large trees, in a parking garage place or your garage.

After the storm

When the storm is over, you should go through your home for damages. If you find some, do whatever you can to limit them:
  • In case of damage to the roof, e.g. tiles fall off, then please cover the open space to prevent water damage inside the building.
  • In case of broken windows - try to cover it up with wooden boards, plastic or anything else that can keep wind and water out.
  • In case of power failure, please check out and empty your freezer. You could, for instance, move food over to friends and acquaintances who have power and space in the freezer.
  • Remove furniture and other personal belongings from spots where water can enter.
Your insurance policy does not cover fallen trees, but if they have damaged the building or your car, you can file an insurance claim.

Remember to document the damage

  • Once you have tried to limit or prevent further damage, you should file an insurance claim
  • Please keep and do not through away the damaged items and take pictures of them.
  • Make a list of the broken items, and please note things like the name, category, age, new price and expected replacement cost.
