Insurance cancellation

Will my insurance policy be cancelled if I terminate my IDA membership?

It's important to know that if you resign from IDA, you won't be able to keep your insurance. IDA Insurance is a member benefit, meaning you must be a member to be covered by our affordable insurance. Before we cancel your insurance, you will receive a letter that tells you when your coverage will end.

How can I cancel my insurance? Can I do it by phone or email?

For most insurance policies, you can request cancellation by phone or mail. The following rules apply to our insurance products in partnership with Tryg:
  • We offer many of our insurance policies in close cooperation with Tryg.
  • If you decide to cancel your Tryg insurance, you must provide a notice of the current month plus 30 days to the end of a calendar month. For example, if you cancel your insurance on July 10, it will end on August 31.
You can also cancel your insurance policies with one month's notice before its renewal/termination date.

You can cancel these policies by sending an email

You can terminate specific insurance policies in writing, such as Group Life Insurance, dental insurance purchased before June 1, 2023, and accident insurance.

Cancellation of supplemental unemployment insurance

If you have supplemental unemployment insurance, you must contact Topdanmark to terminate your policy. You can write to Topdanmark at loensikring@topdanmark.dk

Are there any insurance policies I cannot cancel by myself?

It is only possible to cancel some insurance policies on your own. For instance, you can only cancel building or car insurance with assistance.

Car insurance

Liability insurance for your car is compulsory, which means you must have it. Your insurance company can only terminate your car insurance if it is being transferred to a new insurance company. When you switch to a new insurance company, they will automatically inform the Motor Vehicle Registry that they now insure your car. You can also cancel your car insurance if you change your vehicle or if it is deregistered/sold.

Building insurance

If you have sold your house, the new buyer's insurance company is responsible for terminating the building insurance. If you have a real estate agent helping you with the sale, they typically arrange for the insurance to be terminated in consultation with the buyer.

Does cancelling my insurance cost anything?

You can cancel your insurance with 30 days' notice before a calendar month's end. You can do this without fees until April 23, 2024. After that, the fee may vary: The fee for short-rate cancellation within one year for home contents, dog, cat, child, accident, trailer, and moped insurance will be DKK 484 + DKK 74. The fee for short-rate cancellation within one year for car, motorcycle, caravan, house, holiday home, and travel insurance will be DKK 810 + DKK 74. Fees for all products for short-rate cancellation will be DKK 74 after one year. You can also cancel your insurance on the day of renewal (the renewal/termination date).

Will I get a refund if I cancel my insurance?

As a member of IDA Forsikring, you pay only for the period you have been insured. You won't have to pay for any benefit you don't receive. Your insurance policies are valid for one year. This time expansion means that if you sell your car or house in the middle of the insurance year, you will receive a refund for the remaining premium for the remaining period of the year. For instance, if you sell your car or house after six months, you will receive a refund for the remaining six months' premium.

Have you used NETS (direct payment) or paper invoices?

The premium payment date may vary if you have used NETS or paper invoices to pay your insurance bills. If you decide to terminate your insurance policy on the first day of the upcoming month, the premium will typically be paid around that date. Once the payment is processed, you will receive the money in your NemKonto, a standard account from which you can accept payments from public authorities.

What is unique about short-rate cancellation?

Suppose you cancel your insurance policy early, also known as a short rate, such as when selling your car or house or changing your insurance provider. In that case, you will receive a refund of your premium after five working days. We will typically refund any remaining premium in the first month following the receipt of your cancellation. We will refund the amount to your NemKonto.

Why am I still being charged?

There may be a simple explanation if you have cancelled your insurance but are still receiving bills. To cancel your insurance, you must inform us at least 30 days before the end of the upcoming month (this applies to insurance we offer in conjunction with Tryg). To clarify, if you cancel your insurance in the middle of July, you will still be charged for August if the renewal date is September 1. However, you can cancel your insurance so that it stops on the scheduled renewal date (renewal/termination date).

An insurance policy is valid for one year

When you purchase an insurance policy, it is usually valid for a year from the date of purchase. This modus operandi means the policy automatically renews for another year unless you actively cancel it. Therefore, you only need to contact us to extend the policy if you wish to terminate it.
