I am being seconded: How do my insurance policies cover me?

Embarking on a secondment comes with various considerations, including ensuring you have the right insurance coverage. Unexpected events can be costly if you are not adequately covered. Here is a guide to understanding your insurance coverage.

Posted abroad and insurances

Checking your insurance during secondment is essential

When moving abroad, checking and updating your insurance policies is important. This ensures that you are covered in case of theft, accidents, and other incidents that may result in compensation.
For instance, it's important to determine if your home contents insurance extends to cover your residence abroad, whether your accident insurance provides protection outside Denmark, and if your assets in Denmark remain covered.

How your home contents insurance covers you

If you maintain your Danish residence without changing your address to a foreign country, you can continue to have your home contents insurance, and your belongings will be covered in Denmark. However, if you have an apartment and rent it out while on secondment, your home contents insurance will not cover the tenant's belongings. In such cases, the tenant should have their own home contents insurance covering the address.Remember to inform your insurance provider if your home will be unoccupied during your time abroad. You can contact us at 70 21 01 91 for more information.

Protect your valuables during your journey

When seconded, it's normal to bring some items from home. For example, if you bring your computer to another country and want it covered, consider purchasing international family insurance from Tryg if your employer does not provide coverage. This insurance will cover items you take to EU/EEA countries, excluding Bulgaria, Cyprus, Malta, Greece, Romania, and Slovakia. If you travel outside EU/EEA countries, you should contact an insurance company in the country where you settle.

How your building insurance covers you

There are two scenarios for your home when you are on secondment. You can choose to leave your house vacant, or you can rent it out. Be aware that there are different requirements for these two situations.

Your house is vacant

If your house is empty, it must be monitored both externally and internally every week throughout the uninhabited period. Otherwise, your building insurance will not cover it.

You rent out your house

If you rent out your house while you are abroad, your building insurance covers it. The insurance will cover for two years, after which a reassessment is required.Your house can be insured for a maximum of five years while you are on secondment.

How your car insurance covers you

If you take your car abroad during a secondment, your car insurance still applies if it is registered with Danish number plates. However, moving your possessions is not covered by our insurance policies. Typically, your employer covers moving your possessions, but it's better to double-check.

How your accident insurance covers you

Your accident insurance covers you in Denmark, Greenland, the Nordic countries, and the Faroe Islands. If you stay in an EU/EEA country, the insurance covers you for up to 12 months. For coverage beyond 12 months, you need to make a separate agreement with us. In the rest of the world, you are covered for 12 months without the option of an extension. Note that we may require medical examinations and treatment to be carried out in Denmark and transportation and accommodation expenses are not covered in this regard.

How your travel insurance covers you

Your travel insurance with IDA Forsikring provides coverage when you travel from Denmark or Greenland or have a specific agreement with us. It's important to note that the insurance does not extend to business trips, including the journey from Denmark to the secondment location, as these are considered work-related travel.Should you plan to travel for vacation from the country where you are seconded, kindly reach out to us at 71 21 01 91. We can work together to make suitable arrangements for your coverage.

How your health insurance covers you

If you have IDA Health Insurance, you can keep it while being seconded. It's essential to be aware that treatment and hospitalisation covered by this insurance must occur in Denmark or the Nordic countries, which include Sweden, Norway, and Finland. Please note that Greenland and the Faroe Islands are not part of the covered regions.Other treatments should occur in Denmark, and transportation costs are only covered within the country as well.

How your pet insurance covers you

If you are a dog owner undergoing secondment, we encourage you to reach out to us for assistance. When taking your dog abroad within the EU, please be aware that our dog insurance only covers the liability aspect for your dog. Should your secondment extend beyond the initial period, we offer the option to extend the insurance for a maximum of two years.
